Navigating Caregiving: Helping Your Aging Parent Thrive
Becoming a caregiver for an aging parent is a huge responsibility — and also a profound act of love. As parents get older, they often need help with everyday things like cooking, cleaning, and remembering to take their medicine. Listening to them, being patient, and staying attuned to their needs can make a big difference.
Practical Ways to Help
Sometimes aging parents have trouble moving around or managing their health. You can help by accompanying them to doctor’s appointments and keeping track of their medication schedule. If they use a walker or wheelchair, make sure their home is safe and easy to navigate. Small changes — like removing rugs they might trip on — can go a long way in keeping them safe.
The Importance of Connection
Caregiving isn’t just about chores and health management. Time together matters just as much. Watching movies, playing games, or looking through old photos can create meaningful memories and help your parent feel loved and connected.
Don’t Forget About Yourself
As a therapist, I’ve worked with many family caregivers who put everyone else first. Over time, that can lead to exhaustion, resentment, and burnout. Caregiver burnout is real — and it’s more common than people realize. Caring for yourself isn’t selfish. It’s necessary.
Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and carving out time for things that restore you. Even small moments of rest can help.
When to Ask for Help
If caregiving starts to feel overwhelming, it’s okay — and important — to reach out. Lean on family members, friends, or community resources. And if you find yourself feeling persistently anxious, sad, or depleted, speaking with a therapist can help. Caregiving is emotionally demanding work, and having a safe space to process your feelings can make a real difference in your wellbeing and your ability to show up for your parent.
